Filmmaking: Gear, Apps & VFX

We’ll be covering some exciting developments in filmmaking technology, including a look at the Panasonic Lumix S1 II, a new update to Blackmagic’s Android camera app, and a VFX breakdown of a recent commercial. Let’s dive in!
Panasonic Lumix S1 II
Panasonic Lumix S1 II sound like a pretty awesome for both photos and videos.
It records at 6K 30p or 5.1K at 60 frames per second. The autofocus is reportedly excellent, with strong tracking capabilities for subjects like sports or animals. Its image stabilization ensures smooth video footage, even when shooting while moving.
The S1 II also allows for direct recording to an external hard drive, enhancing its versatility. Additionally, it supports loading LUTs (lookup tables).
Blackmagic’s Android camera app update
Version 2.2 of Blackmagic’s Android camera app has been released, following the iOS update. Available for free on Google Play, it includes several noteworthy improvements.
This update introduces Blackmagic Cloud Folders for convenient video storage. It’s also compatible with the upcoming Android 16 and adds a histogram to assist with brightness level monitoring. Several glitches have been addressed, and overall phone compatibility has been improved.
This update largely closes the feature gap with the iOS version. Android users should consider downloading it. I’d be interested to hear your feedback on the new features.
